![]() THE 7 COUNCIL FIRES During the eighteenth century, the Dakota people identified themselves as belonging to the Oceti Sákowin (Seven Council Fires.) The seven divisions are: Wah'petonwan, Dwellers among the Leaves; Mdewakantonwan, Dwellers of the Spirit Lake; Sisitonwan, Dwellers of the Fish Grounds; Wah'pekute, Leaf Shooters; Ihanktonwan, Dwellers at the End; Ihanktonwana, Little Dwellers at the End; and Titonwan, Prairie Dwellers. The preservation of the Dakota language, culture and traditions will help ensure future generations keep the fires burning. We invite you to come and experience traditional Dakota dancing and cultural music on National Native American Heritage Day, November 27, 2009.
